Is the ACT or SAT better for you?

Columnist for the Charlotte Observer Lee Bierer gives tips on which test to take and test strategies for both.

“SAT fits student who …

  • Did well on the PSAT with little or no prep work.
  • Is a strong reader with a good vocabulary.
  • Has good recall for historical or literature examples for the essay.
  • Possesses strong deductive reasoning and is test-savvy.
  • Is focused and good at puzzles.
  • Has ear for languages; easily identifies sentence errors.
  • Is a bright underachiever.

“ACT fits student who …

  • Did well on the PLAN (the PSAT for the ACT).
  • Earned a PSAT score that is inconsistent with grades and effort.
  • Reads fast but is not so strong in vocabulary.
  • Knows grammar and punctuation.
  • Performs well academically but is likely to experience test anxiety.
  • Is a “book-smart overachiever” but not the best test-taker.
  • Is great at writing argumentative essays about everyday issues.
  • Works quickly – more questions and less time, but less reasoning required.”

SAT scores steady for Class of ‘09

Writer for the New York Times Sam Dillon reports that the SAT scores for the Class of ‘09 held steady.

“Average SAT scores in reading and writing declined by one point this year, while math scores held steady, according to a report on the high school class of 2009 released Tuesday by the College Board.

“Average scores on the ACT, the other major standardized test used for college admissions, were also flat, according to data released last week.

“Average scores on the three sections of the SAT were 501 in critical reading, 493 in writing, and 515 in mathematics. Scores for each section of the test range from 200 to 800.

“Average scores last year, for the high school class of 2008, were 502 in reading, 494 in writing, and 515 in math.”

2009-2010 ACT test dates
