UC Regents adopt changes to freshman eligibility

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

The University of California Office of the President reports on the adopted proposal “to change freshman admission to give more high-achieving students the change to apply to UC and receive a full review of their applications.  The new rules will take effect for the fall 2012 entering class.”

Different from the current policy are the following:

  • Two SAT Subject Tests will no longer be required for admissions. However, the Subject Tests may be recommended for certain majors. As well, students will be allowed to submit scores for the consideration of their application if they choose to do so.
  • 11 of the 15 “a-g” courses must be completed by the end of the applicant’s junior year. Currently, only those applicants in the top 4% of their high school class are required to do so.
  • Students guaranteed admission based on their high school class rank will grow from the current 4% to 9%.
  • Fewer students statewide will receive an admission guarantee. The current admission guarantee applies to the top 12.5% of graduates. This will decrease to the top 10% statewide.  However, all students who qualify with at least 3.0 GPA, who have completed the required UC “a-g” courses, and who have taken the ACT with Writing or SAT Reasoning Test, will be entitled to a comprehensive review of their entire application whether or not they are in the top 10% statewide.

2009-2010 PSAT and SAT Test Dates

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

College Board has now posted the 2009-2010 test and registration dates.  Registration is now open for the following dates:

  • October 10. 2009 (Regular registration closes on September 9)
  • November 7, 2009 (Regular registration closes on October 1)
  • December 5, 2009 (Regular registration closes on October 30)
  • January 23, 2010 (Regular registration closes on December 15)
  • March 13, 2010 (Regular registration closes on February 4)  SAT only, no subject tests
  • May 1, 2010 (Regular registration closes on March 25)
  • June 5, 2010 (Regular registration closes on April 29)

The dates for the PSAT/NMSQT are either Wednesday, October 14th or Saturday, October 17th.  A student must register for the PSAT/NMSQT at a local high school since the test is administered by high schools and not through test centers.  Each high school chooses only one test date, either the 14th or the 17th.  Check with your local high school in the fall.

Big changes in UC admissions?

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

The University of California is contemplating major changes in its admissions process:

  • Eliminate the SAT Subject Test requirement
  • Focus on “individual merits” rather than “a set formula of courses, test scores and grades”
  • Guarantee a seat to the top 10% of students, not 12.5% as before

Why the change? “Each year, about 15 percent of UC applicants are found to be ineligible, although many are strong students with high grades…Many were rejected because they had failed to take the SAT subject exams and others because they had a minor variance from the required curriculum. UC found about 64,000 applicants eligible in 2007.”

Students can soon hide bad SAT scores from colleges

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Starting with the class of 2010, students will be able to pick and choose which SAT Test and SAT Subject Test scores colleges will be able to see. This is promising news for nervous test-takers, though critics point out that the new policy unfairly favors affluent students who can afford more retakes than their less-wealthy counterparts.
