ACT deadline approaching
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008Another reason for reduced leisure reading
Monday, September 29th, 2008A columnist for The Washington Post reports that in the past 20 years, “the percentage of 17-year olds who read nothing at all for pleasure has doubled.” She says we could blame the media–like a national YouTube obsession–but we should also examine our English classes’ choices of literature. “Imagine my dismay when [Catcher in the Rye] was demoted to the eighth or ninth grade. Apparently it wasn’t sophisticated enough for 11th-graders, its language too facile, the plot insufficiently complex. That many 17-year-olds identify powerfully with Salinger’s 17-year-old protagonist was a fact cast by the wayside.”
Her message: students need to be exposed to stories that are meaningful to them, if we want them to be inspired to read.

Dual enrollment: taking college courses while in high school
Monday, September 15th, 2008US News reports that dual enrollment–earning high school and college credits simultaneously–is on the rise. Why? “It has long been an option for students who want more rigorous work than their high school offers. It can also help students cut down on the cost of college by transferring credits. But increasingly, more students are enrolling in dual-credit courses because they think it will help them get into a selective college.”
But be warned: “College advisers say high school students considering dual enrollment should at the very least find out if the schools they’re ultimately considering applying to will accept the dual enrollment credits toward a degree. As a general rule, selective schools don’t, especially in New England.”
