Martha C. Merrill, the dean of admission and financial aid of Connecticut College, offers advice on writing a college application essay:

  • Write about yourself
  • Use your own voice
  • Focus on one aspect of yourself
  • Be genuine
  • Consider a mundane topic
  • Don’t rely on “how to” books
  • Share your opinions
  • Tell a good story
  • Don’t repeat what is already in your application
  • Don’t forget about the supplements

New York Times writer Miguel Helft reports on a new company, Chegg.com, which offers students the option to rent rather than buy textbooks. Students are saving up to 50% of the cost of purchasing new textbooks.

Newsweek’s high school ranking

In a web exclusive, Newsweek has published a controversial high school ranking of the top 1500 high schools in the US.  ”Public schools are ranked according to a ratio devised by Jay Mathews: the number of Advanced Placement, Intl. Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2008 divided by the number of graduating seniors. All of the schools on the list have an index of at least 1.000; they are in the top 6 percent of public schools measured this way.”
