UC to waitlist some freshman applicants

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

The UC Newsroom reports that UCs, with the exception of UCLA and UC Merced, will implement a waitlist process for the fall 2010 freshman admissions.

Some important information about the waitlist process:

  • Students may receive waitlist offers from more than one campus and may accept as many waitlist offers as they wish.
  • Students must opt in to be placed on the waitlist.
  • Students should still submit their statement of intent to register (SIR) at a university where they have received an admissions offer.  If students later accept an offer of admissions from a campus where they were waitlisted, they will forfeit their deposit at the first campus.
  • Campuses will still consider appeals but students cannot appeal for a spot on the waitlist.

UC Regents adopt changes to freshman eligibility

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

The University of California Office of the President reports on the adopted proposal “to change freshman admission to give more high-achieving students the change to apply to UC and receive a full review of their applications.  The new rules will take effect for the fall 2012 entering class.”

Different from the current policy are the following:

  • Two SAT Subject Tests will no longer be required for admissions. However, the Subject Tests may be recommended for certain majors. As well, students will be allowed to submit scores for the consideration of their application if they choose to do so.
  • 11 of the 15 “a-g” courses must be completed by the end of the applicant’s junior year. Currently, only those applicants in the top 4% of their high school class are required to do so.
  • Students guaranteed admission based on their high school class rank will grow from the current 4% to 9%.
  • Fewer students statewide will receive an admission guarantee. The current admission guarantee applies to the top 12.5% of graduates. This will decrease to the top 10% statewide.  However, all students who qualify with at least 3.0 GPA, who have completed the required UC “a-g” courses, and who have taken the ACT with Writing or SAT Reasoning Test, will be entitled to a comprehensive review of their entire application whether or not they are in the top 10% statewide.

UC to admit more out-of-state students

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

The New York Times reveals that, to bring more money in, “the proportion of out-of-state students will rise next year: at Berkeley, almost a quarter of the freshmen admitted for next year will be international or out-of-state students.” This is in addition to raising tuition 32%.

The University of Michigan is in a similar position, currently offering 35% of spots to out-of-state students.

University of California OKs admissions overhaul

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

The San Francisco Chronicle reports on the new eligibility rules for the University of California approved by the UC Board of Regents.

These changes will affect the UC’s Freshman class of 2012–that is, today’s high school Freshman. The changes include the following:

  • SAT subject tests will no longer be necessary.
  • The pool of applicants who will be considered will widen, but the number guaranteed entry into one of the university’s nine undergraduate campuses will shrink.
  • The top 9 percent of high school graduates statewide will be ensured entry, compared with 12.5 percent previously, as well as those in the top 9 percent of their graduating class – up from 4 percent in the past.

Big changes in UC admissions?

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

The University of California is contemplating major changes in its admissions process:

  • Eliminate the SAT Subject Test requirement
  • Focus on “individual merits” rather than “a set formula of courses, test scores and grades”
  • Guarantee a seat to the top 10% of students, not 12.5% as before

Why the change? “Each year, about 15 percent of UC applicants are found to be ineligible, although many are strong students with high grades…Many were rejected because they had failed to take the SAT subject exams and others because they had a minor variance from the required curriculum. UC found about 64,000 applicants eligible in 2007.”
